Shopping in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is the city where you can find plenty of antiques, books and valuable diamonds. In general, shops open from 1 pm and close at 6 pm on Mondays and from 9/10 am to 6 pm from Tuesday to Friday. Most close earlier on Saturdays, at 5 pm.
The area of Nieuwedijk-Kalverstraat is a road about 1 km that is full of shops. This pedestrian area,Nieuwedijk, is close to the Central Station and is basically a shopping area for clothing, sportswear, music and gifts. This road leads to tha famous Dam Square. On the other side of the square you will find the Kalverstraat. Shoes, clothing, bags, gift shops, cards, perfumes and many coffee shops, fast food restaurants and ice cream salons are the attractions that you will find here. At the end of the Kalverstraat on the Muntplein, you will find all sorts of tulips, narcissus and other bulbs and flowers on the Flower market. The bulbs can be transported, so you can carry them with you too. In the Oud Zuid district of the city, near the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk museum, you will find the haute couture boutiques: Cartier, Gucci, Edgar Vos, Tommy Hilfiger and the very impressive Oger shop are all located here.
Department stores and Malls
Amsterdam has great department stores and shopping malls. They offer unique choice of products with imports from Asia, Latin America and Africa. De Bijenkorf located directly at the Dam square offers an excellent variety of choices.
In Amsterdam you may find lively markets, selling food and general goods, or special products such as biological food, antiques, post stamps and art. All markets are located within walking distance from the centre of the city.
